Nick and Bethany’s Summer in Zimbabwe

While most college students use the summer to relax or save up money while working, Bethany and Nick, two students from Liberty University, travelled to Zimbabwe to work with Thirst No More in the city of Bulawayo.  They have spent time helping out in “forever homes,” prisons, a youth arena, and the rural area of Tsholotsho.

The many forever homes scattered across Bulawayo function as small orphanages, each with ten children, a house mother, and a few other helpers.  Nick and Bethany have loved visiting the forever homes and getting to know the children.  They also had quite an interesting experience visiting a few of the prisons, but one of their favorites events is the youth program they help host at the youth arena of Mabu 20 each Saturday.  There Nick and Bethany assist in a program for kids that includes games, singing, a snack, and a Bible story.  They are so excited to spend time with the sweet children and show them the love of God.

Another wonderful experience for two college students was going to Tsholotsho, the rural area where TNM and its partners have been doing most of the well repairs.  Nick spent the week with the family of one of the men on the pump repair team and worked with the team on a well.  Bethany stayed at a local school with a teacher and had the privilege of helping teach English and an HIV/AIDS lesson.  They did run into some initial resistance in the rural areas simply because white people are a rarity there.  However, once the people in the village warmed up to them, Nick and Bethany were able to join in two nights of singing, dancing, and worship.  They had an amazing time experiencing worship with another culture, despite the fact that most of the songs were in the local dialect of Ndbele and they didn’t know what the songs meant!

Nick and Bethany have greatly enjoyed their time in Zimbabwe and have already learned so much.  TNM is excited to have them be a part of the TNM team for the summer and looks forward to hearing more of how God will use them.  To read more about what TNM is doing in Zimbabwe, go to the “Where We Are” section of our website.
